Golf Marathon for Women’s Aid
Alice Ruggles, from Tur Langton was murdered in October 2016, by a former boyfriend.
On Friday 30th June, Trish Formoy is going to play as much golf as possible to raise funds for Women’s Aid, the national charity for women and children, working to end domestic abuse. Trish’s challenge is in memory of Alice, a former pupil of hers at Leicester High School; and inspired by Alice’s mother, Sue Hills, who has shown strength in a situation that no-one would ever wish upon herself. Sue is taking part in the Great North Run later this year for the same cause.
Trish says “I’d like to say Alice threw herself into learning French but honestly, I pushed a bit. What she saw as having a bit of fun with the language, I saw as confident practice of a born communicator and she achieved a very respectable B grade at GCSE. Her favourite part of lessons was acting out role plays, the more ridiculous and elaborate the better. She was a big personality at the school and her death affected all who knew her. It is shocking that in today’s society, 2 woman are killed every week by a violent partner or ex-partner. I am golfing for Women’s Aid to give abused women and children a voice and the chance of a better life”.
Trish loves her golf, playing 2 or 3 times a week with friends, at Kibworth, in opens and in regional events. She admits that her Golf Marathon may be too much of a good thing. Trish aims to play a minimum of 4 rounds at Kibworth Golf Club, which will involve walking 20 miles or more. The Head Professional, Mike Bent, is putting up a prize of a nine-hole playing lesson or four half-hour lessons to whoever guesses closest to the number of shots she takes in the day, in return for a £1 donation. The par for the course is 72 and Trish plays off a handicap of 15 so expects to take at least 348 shots. Trish is also looking for caddies over 9 holes, golfers or non-golfers, to keep her company on her way round … and round … and round.
